Ordinary moments

We rush so fast through our lives that we miss the ordinary moments. But sometimes it’s the ordinary moments that make us stop and realize just how extraordinary life can be.

Here’s a brief retelling of an ordinary bike ride to school with my 5 year old son, the morning after Halloween. I wrote it to him.

“We rode our bikes solo to school this morning, just you and I. We talked about all the candy you got yesterday and which ones are our favorites. You love snickers because there’s gooey stuff inside. You also love sourpatch kids because there’s sugar on the outside. And they’re called sourpatch kids because they’re sour and they’re kids. You remembered I love peppermint patties and you noticed I can ride my bike with one hand when I gestured trying to describe them to you. We talked about wanting to go to the movies this winter and picking out our favorite candy to eat while we watch. We didn’t rush. We got to school and you put on your orange-like-a-pumpkin mask and we hugged real tight. I am happy to have this memory with you.”
